In the context of Arizona’s anti-immigrant legislation and crackdown on undocumented living, Teatro Nopalero emerged as a radical and creative alternative to resist hate and other social problems in Maricopa County. Starting in 2006, Teatro Nopalero began doing skits to inform students on the changing anti-immigrant policies. Using Theater of the Oppressed this group create improvisational skits that empower the community to not be spectators in society but to act for dignity and respect.
